“Reconsideration” appears in older SASSA guidance and in searches for grant appeals. Before following those instructions, check the grant, the period and who made the decision. Current appeals must use the route that applies to that decision.
Do not assume there are two appeal stages
Some older guides describe SASSA reconsideration followed by ITSAA. That is not a universal requirement today. The appeal regulations provide for direct access to the Independent Tribunal. DSD’s annual report explains the change introduced in 2022.
If you have a notice that uses the word reconsideration, keep it and check its date. Ask SASSA or DSD which process covers your case. Do not turn a historical process into a rule for a new decision.
For a declined SRD month
Use the Official DSD SRD appeals portal and follow the instructions for the month you dispute. Our SRD appeal guide explains what to prepare. The 2026 grant booklet directs Covid-19 SRD appeals to DSD’s SRD website.
Check the live deadline and save proof of submission. A change to your banking details or a new status check does not lodge an appeal.
For another social grant
Use the appeal instructions in your refusal notice. The SASSA booklet lists Grantappeals@dsd.gov.za for normal-grant appeals. It also tells applicants they can ask a SASSA official for help.
The general regulations set a 90-day appeal period after the SASSA decision. They also describe late-appeal forms. Ask for help at once if you missed the period; acceptance of a late appeal is not automatic.
Prepare the case you actually need
- The grant name and the period or month in dispute.
- The decision and the date you received it.
- The stated reason for refusal.
- A short explanation of what you believe is wrong.
- Relevant records that support that explanation.
- Your submission reference and a private copy of what you sent.
Make your explanation short and specific. If a record is wrong, ask the organisation that holds it to correct it. Keep proof of that request. Do not let the correction process distract you from the appeal deadline.
If you already received an appeal outcome
Read who issued it. A SASSA decline and an ITSAA appeal outcome are different decisions. Do not assume an unsuccessful ITSAA appeal is only the first step in a new administrative chain. See the tribunal guide and seek legal advice where needed.
