SASSA Independent Tribunal: Final Appeal Body

By MySRD Editorial Team Updated

Update note: Removed invented second-level escalation and outcome guarantees.

ITSAA stands for the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals. It reviews SASSA grant decisions from outside the agency. It is not a second SASSA help desk, and access is not limited to people who first completed a separate reconsideration stage.

What ITSAA does

An appeal asks whether a grant decision should stand. The appeal regulations describe how appeals reach the tribunal and how records are obtained. The grant type and decision determine the route you must use.

DSD’s annual report, page 49 explains that changes implemented in May 2022 gave applicants direct access to the tribunal. That is why older advice to complete mandatory SASSA reconsideration first is not a safe general rule.

How to reach the right appeal service

For SRD, use the Official DSD SRD appeals portal. For other social grants, the 2026 SASSA grant booklet gives the DSD appeal address Grantappeals@dsd.gov.za and says you can ask a SASSA official for help. Follow the instructions for your grant and decision.

For a step-by-step overview, read the grant appeal guide. Do not send a permanent-grant appeal through the SRD form just because both grants are administered by SASSA.

What to prepare

  • The grant name and the period or month in dispute.
  • The decision and the date you received it.
  • The stated reason for refusal.
  • A short explanation of what you believe is wrong.
  • Relevant records that support that explanation.
  • Your submission reference and a private copy of what you sent.

Explain the error you believe was made. Link each point to a useful record. A corrected identity record, income evidence or medical report can address different kinds of refusal. Neither the size of a file nor the act of appealing guarantees approval.

Time limits and late appeals

Act promptly. The general appeal regulations set a 90-day period for an appeal against a SASSA decision and provide a route to request acceptance of a late appeal. SRD has its own rules: check the current deadline on the official SRD appeals service. Late acceptance is not guaranteed.

Check the notice you received. Ask for help quickly if it is unclear or if you may already be late. Do not wait for an unrelated complaint to finish.

If the tribunal decides against you

First confirm that the outcome is from ITSAA, rather than the original SASSA decision. There is no new routine ITSAA stage simply because its own appeal outcome is unsuccessful.

The appeal regulations explain the decision process. If you believe the tribunal decision is unlawful, seek legal advice about the available remedy and applicable time limits. A website cannot assess whether a court challenge fits your case.

Keep the written decision and the records you submitted. Do not pay someone who promises to reverse it. Read what to check after an unsuccessful SRD appeal.

If the appeal succeeds

Read the decision carefully and keep it. Ask SASSA about the payment or action needed for the period covered. A successful outcome is not proof that a deposit has already reached your account. Track the decision and payment separately.
