SASSA stands for the South African Social Security Agency. It runs every non-contributory social grant in South Africa. That covers the Old Age Pension right through to the R370 SRD grant. This section answers the everyday questions people ask most. Which phone numbers are really official? Does the WhatsApp channel work? What USSD codes exist, and which do not? How do the local and provincial offices work? And what is the difference between an old SASSA Gold card and the new Postbank black card? Things shifted in 2026. The Post Office lost its SASSA payment role and Postbank took over card issuance. Some third-party sites still list dead numbers and dead USSD codes. We check every entry against sassa.gov.za and the SRD portal at srd.sassa.gov.za before we publish. Is a channel unverified or contested? We say so instead of guessing. Use these guides to confirm the right official channel. Do that before you call, message or dial anything that claims to be SASSA.
What’s inside SASSA Essentials
The SASSA Essentials cluster is the trust layer for every other section of MySRD. You may want to check a status, appeal a decline or apply for a grant. First be sure the number you call really belongs to SASSA. Check that the WhatsApp account is not a scam. Make sure the USSD code you dial will not quietly eat your airtime. This hub tests each channel every month. We use the official sassa.gov.za and srd.sassa.gov.za pages.
A few people get the most from this hub. One group is new beneficiaries getting their first Postbank card. Another is family members helping an older relative on Old Age Pension (R2,400 or R2,420 for over-75s). Last is anyone sent a WhatsApp message from a number claiming to be SASSA. They need to check it before sharing personal details. Is someone asking for your PIN, banking password or a photo of your ID? If they claim to be from SASSA, treat it as fraud. Report it on 0800 60 10 11.
2026 updates that matter
Two big shifts landed in 2026. First, the SRD R370 grant now runs to March 2027. So the monthly re-verification cycle carries on without a break. Second, Postbank now issues the black SASSA card. It replaced both the old Gold SASSA card and the Post Office payout system. Still holding a Gold SASSA card? Take your green ID or Smart ID to a Postbank-enabled branch and swap it. The new card works at ATMs and at retailer till points (Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, Boxer, USave). You can also use it for CashSend collection.
Only two verified contact channels are still active in 2026. One is the toll-free helpline 0800 60 10 11. The other is the WhatsApp service on 082 046 8553. Any other number doing the rounds on social media is unverified, including 082 054 0016. Do not use it for status enquiries. No current official SASSA page lists a USSD code for SRD status. SASSA has never confirmed the codes on third-party sites, so we do not publish them. Were you given a code? Confirm it on 0800 60 10 11 before you dial it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the real SASSA WhatsApp number?
The only official SASSA WhatsApp number is 082 046 8553. Save it as “SASSA Official”, send “Hi”, and choose Status from the menu.
Which USSD code checks my SRD status?
No current official SASSA page lists one. The codes on third-party sites have never been confirmed by SASSA. Check your status on srd.sassa.gov.za, on WhatsApp 082 046 8553, or call 0800 60 10 11 free from any network.
Is the old SASSA Gold card still working?
Postbank is phasing out the Gold SASSA card for the new black card. Visit any Postbank-enabled branch with your ID to swap. Payments still land on the Gold card during the switch. The new card is safer and works at more retailers.
How do I report SASSA fraud?
Call the fraud hotline on 0800 60 10 11 or email gcis@dsd.gov.za. Never pay anyone claiming to speed up a SASSA application.
Do I need to reapply after the R350 became R370?
No. The amount changed automatically for existing SRD beneficiaries. Your file, ID, and cellphone stay the same.
Can SASSA staff visit my house?
SASSA does do verification visits for permanent grants. Foster Care and Disability see them most. Staff will have an ID card and a written authorisation. They never ask for money or PINs.
Where is my nearest SASSA office?
Use the office locator at sassa.gov.za or call 0800 60 10 11. Local offices handle permanent grant applications. SRD is fully online.
