SASSA Comparisons 2026: SRD vs UIF, Grants Combined

People rarely qualify for only one form of support. The rules for combining them are strict. Many people get them wrong. This section is the "which one applies to me" hub. It compares SRD R370 against UIF and the Child Support Grant. You also learn how the Old Age Pension works with a private pension. Can you get two SASSA grants at the same time? Usually only one per adult. Grants for dependents are separate. The hub also sets the SRD R370 income threshold of R624 per month against the UIF benefit. We show why the SASSA and NSFAS means tests count income in different ways. Each comparison guide lays the two options side by side. Expect 2026 amounts, thresholds and eligibility rules. Every one ends with a plain-language "who should choose which" tip. Is your household running out of income mid-year? Not sure which application to send first? Start here.

What’s inside comparison guides

South Africa’s safety net is a patchwork. It holds grants, insurance schemes and student funding. So it is easy to apply to the wrong one. Many people miss a benefit they qualify for. This hub sits next to the SRD, UIF, NSFAS and Home Affairs guides. It helps you pick the programme that fits your case. You get the practical differences between SRD and UIF. Next comes how SASSA and NSFAS treat the same household. Can you hold more than one SASSA grant at once? And how does the R624 monthly means threshold decide SRD eligibility?

These guides help a few kinds of reader. Some have just lost work and must choose between UIF and SRD. Others juggle several grants. An Old Age Pension recipient caring for grandchildren on Child Support is one example. A few were rejected from one scheme and want to know their next option. And students from grant households use them to confirm NSFAS qualification. Every guide uses the verified 2026 amounts. Those are R370 SRD, R580 Child Support, R580 Grant-in-Aid, R1,290 Foster Care, R2,400 Old Age Pension (60-74) and Disability, R2,420 for 75+ and War Veterans, and Care Dependency at R2,400.

2026 updates that matter

The SRD R370 grant now runs to March 2027. That locks in the R624 monthly income threshold for another year. One number decides SRD eligibility each month. Any income above R624 in a calendar month triggers a rejection for that month. That includes UIF deposits, casual work and transfers into your bank account. Does your income drop back below the threshold? Then reapply the following month.

The Post Office no longer distributes SASSA payments. Postbank now issues the black SASSA card. That changes how you compare payment channels. SRD is paid to your own bank account, cash send number or Postbank account. Permanent grants run on the standard SASSA payment cycle. Those are Old Age, Disability, Child Support and Foster Care. Older Persons come first, Disability second and Children’s grants third. SRD pays from the 24th of each month. Appeals for any grant type run through ITSAA within 90 days of the rejection SMS.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get SRD R370 and UIF together?

Only if your UIF payment is below the R624 monthly means threshold. Above R624, SRD is declined for that month.

Can I hold two SASSA grants at the same time?

Yes for certain combinations. A caregiver can receive Old Age Pension and Child Support for grandchildren. Disability plus Grant-in-Aid (R580) is allowed when full-time care is needed. You cannot hold Disability and Old Age at the same time.

What is the difference between SRD and UIF?

UIF is insurance. You only get it if you worked and paid in. SRD is a relief grant with no contributions. It is for unemployed adults with no other income above R624 per month.

How does NSFAS treat SASSA households?

Any household with a SASSA grant recipient automatically passes the NSFAS means test. Submit the grant confirmation letter with your NSFAS application.

Do NSFAS allowances count as income for SRD?

No. NSFAS allowances are set aside for study costs. They do not count in the R624 SRD income check.

Which grant pays first each month?

Older Persons first, Disability second, Children’s grants third, and SRD from the 24th onwards. The exact dates move each month around weekends and public holidays. SASSA does not pay on the 1st.

How do I appeal a rejected grant?

All SASSA appeals go through the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). You have 90 days from the rejection SMS. Lodge SRD appeals through srd.sassa.gov.za. Permanent grant appeals go through your local SASSA office.
